Winter Weather Policy
Winter Weather Policy
At Holy Cross School, the safety of our students, parents, and staff is our top priority during inclement weather. Given our location near the ocean, weather conditions at the school can differ significantly from those in inland areas. Please use your best judgment when deciding whether it is safe to travel to school.
School Closure and Remote Learning
When severe weather or other circumstances affect the safety of opening the school, Holy Cross will transition to Remote Learning for the day. Unlike public schools, which must consider bus routes and clear sidewalks, our primary focus is the ability of parents to safely transport students to and from school.
Notification of Remote Learning Days
If a Remote Learning Day is necessary, parents will be notified before 6:30 AM via the Parent Alert System within FACTS. Notifications will include an email, voice message, and/or text outlining the day’s plan.
Additionally, notifications will be posted on WCSH (Channel 6) and WGME (Channel 13).
Late Starts and Early Releases
In some cases, a delayed start may allow us to avoid hazardous morning conditions and safely open the school later in the day. However, due to the inconvenience late starts may cause for parents, they are used sparingly.
Occasionally, weather conditions may worsen unexpectedly during the day, requiring an early release to ensure families can travel home safely. Both late starts and early releases will be communicated via the Parent Alert System.
Remote Learning Guidelines and Schedule
On days when the school cannot open, students will engage in Remote Learning, with specific plans based on their grade level:
Pre-K to 4th Grade
Students will use a “Snow Pack” provided by their teachers in advance of anticipated Remote Learning days. Students should complete the assignments in the pack and return it to school on the next in-person day.
Middle School (Grades 5–8)
Middle school students will meet with their core class teachers online via Teams in the morning. Teachers will email links to students’ school email accounts for each class. During these meetings, teachers will provide lessons and assignments for further work.
- Technology Requirements: Teams does not require additional software installation. Students simply click the meeting link provided by their teacher to join the session.
- Remote Learning Schedule: Classes will follow a specific Remote Learning Schedule to ensure structure and continuity.
General Remote Learning Expectations
- A Remote Learning Day is considered a full day of school. Attendance is required and will be recorded.
- Students must log in to their Teams meeting at the assigned time.
- Students should wear attire appropriate for a dress-down day.
- Cameras must remain on for the duration of the class.
- Respectful behavior toward teachers and classmates is expected at all times.
