As an excellent foundation for the student’s English vocabulary, Latin is taught in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. In years I and II, the focus is on grammar and vocabulary with extensive emphasis on English grammar as a starting point for learning Latin. In the first 2 years, students will be introduced to translation of Latin literature. With this background, year III moves into reading of Latin literature and the translation of substantive works from Latin to English and English to Latin. By the end of year II, students are prepared to undertake Latin II at a high school level.
Speaking in front of peers, teachers and families is a way of life at Holy Cross. Our children - Pre-Kindergarten to Eigth Grade - are always reading at a mass or a prayer service or singing in our choir or at one of our yearly music programs. Their confidence shows in how well our children perform in the yearly national civic oration contest or in Odyssey of the Mind.
