PRE-KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION

The Holy Cross Pre-Kindergarten class schedule is from 9am to 11:30am five days a week, with a choice of 2,3 or 5 days attendance. Our program is centered on a weekly theme. The primary activities for the unit will be planned for Monday, Wednesday and Friday Morning. For our 5-day students, on Tuesdays and Thursdays we will work in smaller groups and explore the unit in more depth

The classes are small with between 12 and 15 students, and 2 teachers who are trained in early childhood education.

Four-Year-Old Program

  • 8:45am - 11:45am
  • Three Morning Option - Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • Five Morning Option - Monday - Friday

Our afternoon program focuses on play-based learning in a more unstructured environment, working in small groups and interactive centers.

When you walk into the pre-school classrooms, you will notice that all the children are busy interacting with one another engaging in activity. The classroom is designed to fulfill the developmental needs of the child.

The Motive for Activity

Introducing vocabulary; positive speech; positive reinforcement; use of child’s hands; physical respect; satisfaction of completion; observation and pinpoint disruption; puzzles.

Sensorial Development

Children learn to recognize and discuss; learn to match and sort: colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and sounds. Learn the difference between: Wide/narrow; thick/thin; tall/short. Learn to arrange in order.

Cultural Subjects

Children learn the use of scissors; glue; paint; pencil; eraser; and crayons. Basic sewing concepts; sing songs; and play games; each child is given a chance to express themselves at Show & Tell.

Language/Mathematics

Children learn to count to ten; learn the names of numbers; colors; animals; geometrical shapes; furnishings; clothing items; body parts. Learn sounds of letters; match number symbol to quantity; speak in complete sentences: use polite phrases. The days of the week; months of the year; as well as the weather and it’s affect on the world around us.

Practical Life & Care

Children learn Care of Self, use the toilet, wash and dry hands, wash face, use spoon and fork, drink from a glass, wipe nose, put on jacket and shoes, hang up coat, learn to use zipper, buttons, Velcro, buckles, pour own drink, serve own food, ask for help politely. Use a sponge for cleaning, use a paper towel for drying, carry a tray, push in chair, and put work away.

Handle Objects with Care

Walk without bumping or stepping into/onto people or things, say “excuse me,” ask permission to do things.
