Within the Holy Cross School community, the Middle School maintains a flexible but structured environment that is uniquely suited to the special needs of early adolescent student. This is a crucial period in their development, making a smooth transition from childhood to the early stages of adolescence is important to us.

The faculty of the Middle School, highly skilled and dedicated to working with this age group, diligently accommodate the students' differing intellectual, social and emotional needs.

Middle School Corridor

The Classrooms are broken down into smaller classes in the Middle School, therefore the sixth grade class, as a whole is approximately 32 students; with the average classroom size is 16. This allows each student to participate, to be involved and to receive individual attention on a daily basis. Teachers, administrators and staff are involved with the students in extra-curricular and community service activities as well, guiding students in the equally important learning experiences gained outside the classroom.

Daily/Weekly meetings between Middle School students and their Home Room teachers build a strong relationship that help teachers recognize and react quickly to needs and specific strengths of our Middle School student.

The students find an increased emphasis on nightly homework, specific grades as well weekly and quarterly exams. At the same time, Middle Schoolers continue their development in the diverse areas of computer skills, art, and music & dramatic arts. They are mentors to the younger student starting in the sixth grade having first grade prayer partners, seventh grade being paired up with second graders and eight with kindergartens.

They are very involved in stewardship within our school and our communities:

  • Working in the school store
  • Volunteering in our community
  • Volunteering at the South Portland Food Cupboard

Field trips among the classes expand the student's educational and cultural awareness of the world around them.
